Conversations on the Bus.........

Firstly, I do know that snooping in on other people's conversations is pretty rude, but some people (like me) are just too loud and you can't help but listen in - especially when they're on the bus.  One day this week was a particular cracker as I had a canny bit of time out on the buses and heard allsorts - it was truly fantastic.  I do follow a twitter account @busoverheards which has some funny anecdotes on it and whoever does it, is very funny and some of them are spot on and make me chuckle.

So there I am, sat on the bus and waiting to leave a well know North East bus station that has a pub nearby. There's a man and a woman sat a couple of rows in front of me and the guy notices his Dad stood outside said pub and then points him out to the young lady and then goes onto explain who all the other people are stood in the group.  One of the group (and I can't remember her name, thankfully) was pointed out as the Dad's ex-partner, but he doesn't have much to do with her now as she's turned into a lesbian !  A cracking fact, I'm sure, but not sure that half a bus needed to know and I bet everyone was thinking the same as me - how do you turn into a lesbian ?

Anyway, moving on and I was relatively close to home when a lady with a pushchair gets on the bus.  She did look a bit harassed and the driver was brilliant as he was really patient as she couldn't find her ticket and he then waited until she was fully seated before moving off.  Top customer service I thought and then her phone rings and the bus turns into Jeremy Kyle live.  The conversation started on how badly on of her children was behaving at school and how she was going to go into the school to find out what was going on as it wasn't good enough.  We then took a quick turn onto the kid not seeing enough of its father and that one visit in 4 months wasn't good enough and she was probably dead right.  There was talk of legal advice, contact centre's, interfering relatives and all sorts, but all at a volume where the whole bus could hear.  The convo then took a turn for the worse as there where comments about her previous partner being abusive and she didn't want to see him and that she had mental health issues as a result of the relationship - we're now in real Jeremy Kyle country !  At that point, I noticed that the pushchair was empty - Christ on a bike, have her mental health issues taken over and she's left the poor bairn somewhere - surely not !!!  Sadly, though, we'll never know as I had to get off and this poor woman was still bleathering away at hundreds of decibels on her mobile.  I felt sorry for her as she seemed really stressed, but I still don't think the whole bus needs to know the details.

The final bit of bus overheard humour was with a couple of young lasses who were talking about a text one of them had received from "Dominic" telling her that he wanted nowt more to do with her - now, I was thinking that might be son & heir's mystery female and he's bombed her oot !  I did ask him when I got home, but it was nowt to do with him, but this poor Dominic was getting slagged off something rotten by these two lasses, tremendous stuff.

The irony is that one of my work colleagues is obsessed with not talking too loud on the bus, especially if your discussing something about work.  I think he's got it spot on, as some people are just really loud on the bus and you just don't want to know what they're talking about.

Sometimes, it can be just too much, but I do like a bit of Jeremy Kyle, just not on the bus !

Chester-le-Street Athletics Club - a Parents View

After my experience yesterday with one of the coaches at Chester-le-Street Athletics Club, I thought I'd blog about my experiences as a parent, sort of athlete and recently qualified coaching assistant. We've had an involvement with the club for a number of years as Dominic has trained there since he packed in football just over 4 years ago.  When he first joined he was getting info on competitions and competing, but he wasn't great and soon the mentions of competitions stopped.  However, it didn't put him off and he kept going, with a number of different coaches, some of whom didn't turn up regularly and he seemed to be passed from pillar to post until he settled in Brian's group. Once she reached the right age, Philippa also joined and she did really well in her first few events at Quadkids at Gateshead.  She really enjoyed it and progressed even further in the second year at Quadkids, where she came 2nd.  Unfortunately though, she seemed to be overlooked ...

Over The Winter With Philippa

The challenge over the indoor season for Philippa was that lots of things changed - the move up to the U20 age group saw her to take on new challenges, especially as the hurdles went up in height for the first time in 4 years plus the Shot Put got a kilo heavier. It's fair to say that the hurdles were the biggest challenge and not so much in the height, more in the spacing.  A lot of work went in over the winter on the hurdles and her first race was at the Northern Indoor Open in Sheffield on the 7th December where she clocked 9.27 seconds - not a bad start.  The 4k Shot experience had started a little earlier with a 10.18m throw at the Gateshead Indoor Series back in November.  Back at the Northern Indoor Open, Philippa threw 10.42m in the Shot to give her a new pb. As we moved into 2020, the main competition targets for Philippa were the Northern Indoor Championships and the Scottish National Indoor Championships.  There was also a Combined Events feel to the...

The Day I Went To Denby Dale.....

There's been a lot of time spent in Leeds recently whilst Philippa is on her Youth Talent Pathway course with British Athletics & one of the contact days being on a Monday gave a bit of a gricing opportunity. There's been a lot of negativity on the Northern rail franchise and it will transfer to become a directly operated railway in a couple of weeks time. So, with a few hours to kill & an £8.10 West Yorkshire Day Rover ticket in prospect, it was time to head off in search of Pacers and wherever the mood took me...... The first trip was from Headingley into Leeds on a late running Knaresborough working which was particularly busy. Once I got to Leeds, it was a decision on where to go next - there was a Knottingley departure that I thought might be a Pacer but turned out to be 158, so I thought I'd try something new as 195123 was sitting on a Manchester Victoria departure via Bradford. Ideally, I was wanting to head to Huddersfield for a trip towards Sh...
