Hoy the Hammer with Lexie

After a great winter of training with the Hammer, unfortunately lockdown put pay to any early season competition - the plan was to open her season at the Spenborough Open Meeting, but the plans disappeared.

The training & hard work continued though when training could resume & Lexie continued to work hard with Nick to improve her technique & power with her throws. She even featured in a couple of EA Webinars on how her technique had changed and improved.

So, we did eventually get to some competition & Lexie started her season with a guest place at Morpeth's Inter Club match on the 8th August. It was a fantastic performance with a great series of throws & she was sitting at just over 39m when there was a financial reward offered if she could hit 40m - it was close, with her final throw being 39.84m. A huge improvement on her previous job of 23.40m - she was delighted.

But this is Lexie and she always wants to improve.  Her next Hammer outing was at the first NE Covid meeting on the 23rd August and she improved her on by 1cm to 39.85m.

There was still more to come though, and we negotiated another place for her to compete at the Run Jump Throw event in Doncaster on the 20th September. It was a lovely warm day, if a little windy but off she went to compete whilst I was officiating on the long jump. I couldn't really see much of her throwing, other than her very impressive warm up throw. She was ecstatic when she'd finished as she'd hit a new pb of 42.05m, a throw which would see her finish 3rd in the UK for U15G Hammer. That was my officials expenses gone for the event and we might have had a celebratory Costa at Wetherby on the way home.

Lexie's next competition was the following week at the England Throws Camp Invitational event at Moulton College in Northamptonshire.  I think the pressure got to her a bit as she didn't throw well & struggled to keep her balance in the very windy conditions.  Luckily,  she had some help from Garry Herrington to calm her down a bit & she finished off throwing 36.22m, but she learned a lot from the experience and frustration of the day.

It's fair to say that there had been a huge change in her performances despite limited opportunities to train and compete - if you'd have asked any of us to guess her end of season pb, I don't think anybody would have said anything over 40m, but she worked hard with Nick & achieved something really special.

Training over the winter has been disrupted again due to lockdown,  but we'll see what 2021 brings for Lexie with the Hammer.

From Scrap Vans to Ticketmaster.....

A bit of a doubler here on the old blog today as there's a couple of things on my mind at the moment. So let's start with scrap vans.  Is the emergence of the scrap van just a County Durham phenomonan, or are they region or even nationwide ?  There certainly seems to be a huge number of them around our little it of County Durham and not a day goes by when there's not one in our street.  Amazingly, when I was out for a run yesterday morning, I saw 3 of them and I was out just over an hour.  Is there really that much scrap around that it's keeping them all in business, who knows !  I know that there's a lot of them around Easington Lane and that there possibly not the sort of people that you'd mess with, but I still don't see where the money is and they must cover an awful lot of miles.  I'm not really that sure that many of the vehicles are quite that roadworthy either as they always look quite mature and seem to have various bits hanging off from all s...

Toon Army Rollercoaster - Is It Time To Get Off ?

After a period of lull and boredom, the Toon Army Rollercoaster has taken an almighty nosedive once again with the ridiculous appointment of Joe Kinnear as Director of Football.  It has to be said that the whole situation at NUFC seems to be at farcical level once more and after listening to the interview with Kinnear on Talksport the other week, you have to wonder what on earth is going on in Mike Ashley's mind.  Kinnear seems to think that the fans are against him as he's not a Geordie, whereas in real life the reason the fans don't want him hear is that he's got no idea on what he's doing, hasn't been in football for years and as the radio interview showed, is a compulsive liar.  I'm not against the position of having a Director of Football as long as its the right person and I have no faith in Joe Kinnear whatsoever in that role, or pretty much anything else for that matter - even as a kebab seller ! Had it just been me with a season ticket, then my ...

Funny Old Game

Some say that Football is a funny old game, but after today's Toon result, I have to agree. Off we trotted to St James Park today thinking that a win would be easy - the Toon have been very good in the last couple of games, especially at home and Sunderland have been poor, despite the managerial change, the performance at Chelsea wasn't great and the same old defensive frailties were there for all to see. In the first half we made some decent chances and looked the better team and we forced Mignolet into some good saves, but then the unbelievable happened and Sunderland scored on the break.  The impressive Sessegnon gave them the lead with a breakaway goal and then we looked poor at the back, with the situation not getting any better in the second half. Having been to four Sunderland home games so far this season (all for nowt by the way), I've not heard their fans sing at all, but all of a sudden they were, and in our back yard too. The situation just went from bad...
